Sources revealed that several rooms were still lying vacant in the boys’ hostel of the University, while around 250 students belonging to remote parts of the region were forced to hire private accommodation to pursue their studies.
“Only the students belonging to the area situated at a distance of not less than 47 kilometers from the varsity are entitled for the hostel accommodation but ironically some of the students belonging to Jammu City are even enjoying the facility at the cost of deserving one”, some of the aggrieved students told Greater Kashmir.
They even alleged that number of rooms in Swami Vivekananda Boys’ hostel and old University Campus were lying vacant since last session but the university authorities refused the accommodation to the deserving students for the reasons best known to them.
“Nearly 250 students belonging to far off areas of district Poonch, Rajouri, Leh and Kargil have been forced to live in privately hired accommodation in the city”, they alleged further.
Out of total 220 seats in two boys ‘post graduate’ hostels of the varsity, official sources said, 7 percent seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribe students, while 8 percent for the students belonging to Schedule Caste category. Contrary to this, only 4 seats to the SC students and 2 seats to the ST students have been allotted.
Prof BL Sharma, Provost Boys’ hostel, however denied the allegation and said that all the rules have been allotted to the deserving students and no rule has been violated.
