Planting bombs for booty, Police give clean chit to arrested civilians

SYED AMJAD SHAH

Jammu, Oct 19: Four accused persons, earlier believed to be operatives of Hizbul Mujahideen, have been given clean chit by the police in much hyped IED recovery case here.

Official sources said arrested persons from Jammu and Gandoh area of Doda district have been found innocents and were only used by some `agencies’ in packing and transportation of the explosives, without their knowledge.

Based on the sustained interrogations conducted by various intelligence agencies and police, four persons have been arrayed as witnesses against the main culprits, including two Special Police Officers (SPOs) and a former army troopers who were allegedly working for Military Intelligence.

If sources are to be believed four persons, identified as Muhammad Ayub, Nazakat Hussain (a travel agent), Munib Ahmed son of Nayaz Ahmed Khan of Qara (Gandoh) and Muhammad Ashraf, residents of Gandoh and Thathri respectively were produced before a local court, here on Tuesday, which recorded their statement under Section 164-A. “They are no more accused but material witnesses in the case and their testimony will be used against the main culprits in the court of law”, a senior police officer told Greater Kashmir. The case now revolves entirely around the two SPOs and ex-army man , whereas one of the drivers Muneer Ahmed of Gandoh was still being questioned, sources added.

The dramatic recovery of `explosives’ has already put Military Intelligence under scanner for its alleged involvement in the case that too only for official rewards and promotions.
